| Description: | Easdale Island. Argyllshire. Easdale Slate quarry in 'Black Slate Group'. The working face. The photograph shows a working crane and a narrow gauge railway with a truck. Note the precarious ladder used by the quarrymen. The cleavage dips steeply from left to right, and the bedding is almost indistinguishable (the working faces are mainly cleavage planes, the wrinkling on the latter being due to an incipient strain-slip cleavage). The 'Easdale Slates' are a dark blue-grey colour and can become slightly 'browned' by superficial weathering. The slates usually contain scattered crystals of iron pyrites, the 'diamonds' of the quarrymen. |
