Description: Thurso Flagstone Works. Caithness. A general view across the harbour at Thurso toward the works showing flagstones awaiting shipment. Flagstones are shown arranged in orderly rows outside of, and in front of the machinery sheds. The cutting machinery seen in B00850 is clearly seen. Note the two masted square-rigged sailing ship alongside the works quay. The usual stock sizes of the shaped flags are from two feet six inches in length, and one foot four inches in breadth, but much larger sizes could be supplied. Unusually long flags were used for gateposts. Thicker flags were chiefly used for paving, the thinner for damp-courses in building.
