Caption: Shell sand. Just above highwater mark, 0.25 mile east of John o' Groats Hotel. Caithness.
Description: Composed of shell fragments, from 1 to 5 mm across, with a small amount of rock grains. The slide is of the residue after dissolving out the carbonate. The material remaining is mainly argillaceous, feldspathic and micaceous sandstone and gritty mudstone, with subordinate quartz and a little quartzite and microcline, and scarce igneous and metamorphic rocks.
