Caption: | Burdiehouse Limestone. Hopetoun Wood Quarry, Abercorn. West Lothian. |
Description: | Almost black aphanitic rock, resembling bituminous mudstone. Composed of a very fine calcite aggregate coloured brownish and yellowish by finely disseminated bituminous matter. In the larger pieces and long streaks the latter is mainly a homogeneous yellow isotropic material but is sometimes orange and almost opaque. Opaque material includes carbonaceous matter and pyrite. These constituents produce a parallel banding in the rock. There are occasional calcareous fragments of shells, and only a very few grains of quartz are recognizable. The rock powder, heated in a closed tube, evolves a heavy yellow oil and a more volatile colourless fraction. Limestone, bituminous, luteous, pelitomorphic, subclastizoic, bedded. SL0173. Britrocks S35986. Magnification x40. Light XPL. |
