Caption: Charlestown Main Limestone, main seam workings. Cults and Pitlessie Limeworks. Fife Region.
Description: Brownish-grey, compact, finely granular limestone composed largely of the debris of shells, polyzoa and foraminifera in a base of small grains of calcite. Treatment in Lemberg's solution shows that the carbonate is dominantly calcite, but some turbid foraminifera and shell fragments do not stain or stain only slightly. Brown interstitial films and scraps of bitumen are abundant and grains of pyrite sparse. Limestone, fine-grained, microfossiliferous, clastizoic. SL0049. Britrocks S34464. Magnification x40. Light XPL.
