Caption: Biotite-quartz-feldspar schist from an outcrop of Grampian Group metasedimentary rocks. Sample from Gleann an t-Slugain, approximately 2.5 kilometres south-east of the southern contact of the Cairngorm Pluton. Light: XPL.
Description: The image shows a band several millimetres wide and running from the top right to bottom left of the view that is rich in crystals of brown biotite and flanked on either side by bands rich in colourless quartz and feldspar. In this view the quartz has a pale yellow to orange colouration, indicating that the thin section is thicker than usual. The cross-polarised light reveals that crystals of quartz are clear and fresh (unaltered), while crystals of feldspar generally have a mottled appearance caused by their partial replacement by very small crystals of white mica.
