Description: This image shows typical coarse Cairngorm granite, which is dominated by approximately equal proportions of orthoclase feldspar, plagioclase feldspar and quartz, with a little dark brown biotite. Quartz is clear, fresh and colourless, while the feldspars and biotite are typically quite altered, as in this view. The feldspars are discoloured by an uneven 'dusting' of very fine-grained secondary minerals. A crystal of dark brown biotite (just right of centre) is partly replaced by chlorite and white mica. Cairngorm granite commonly contains millimetre-scale angular 'miarolytic cavities that may be empty or partially to completely filled by minerals such as mica, chlorite and clay that precipitated from fluid that circulated through the rock shortly after it had solidified. In this view, several miarolytic cavities have been filled by colourless white mica.
