Caption: Buckingham Old Gaol, Buckinghamshire.
Description: Built in the 18th century in a mock castle style this jailhouse is constructed of a wide range of locally quarried Jurassic limestones from the White Limestone, Forest Marble and Cornbrash. The local Middle Jurassic shelly limestones of the Great Oolite Group are used extensively in the fabric of the Gaol. There are examples of limestones from each of the main formations in the area. The Old Gaol was built in 1748 and is today, regarded as one of the oldest purpose-built prisons to be found in the United Kingdom. It is an early example of 18th century Gothic architecture. The limestones of the Great Oolite Group are one of our principal sources of building limestones in the United Kingdom. They outcrop from the Dorset coast to Northamptonshire and are used in some of the country's most prestigious buldings. The Great Oolite Group includes all of the Bath stones, some the principal Cotswold stones, the Taynton, and Stonesfield stones in Oxfordshire and the White Limestone of Buckinghamshire.
