Caption: Belton House, Grantham, Lincolnshire.
Description: Built in the late 17th century this National Trust House is constructed of limestone quarried locally from the Lincolnshire Limestone Formation at Heydour (Ancaster Stone) and Ketton quarries. The yellow-grey oolitic and shelly limestones of the Ancaster limestone is the principal stone used in the walls of the house. By contrast the Ketton stone is paler in colour and uniformly oolitic with little or no shell debris. Belton House, built in 1685-88 for Sir John Brownlow is a very important example of Restoration country house architecture. Ancaster stone is one of the principal building stones of the East Midlands. This oolitic and shelly limestone is produced in several varieties - Hard White, Weatherbed and Freestone. The Lincolnshire Limestone Formation is the source of several famous building stones - Ancaster, Barnack, Ketton, Clipsham and Weldon.
