Caption: Specimen of sandstone from Dunhouse Quarry, Staindrop, County Durham, England
Description: The image is part of a sample of sandstone which shows a characteristic uniform texture and grain structure of a quartz-rich sandstone. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7334. The sandstone is dominated by grains of quartz and feldspar. The overall brownish colour is caused by the presence of fine-grained iron oxide minerals throughout the rock. Dunhouse quarry has been worked since the early 1900s. The sandstone is a fine-grained, buff coloured stone from the Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grit. The stone has proved popular for repairs and restoration work in Edinburgh. Between 1989 and 1991, 2300 cubic feet of Dunhouse stone was used for restoration and repairs to the Balmoral Hotel (formerly the North British Hotel), mainly on the east and west elevations and for restoring the cornice of the clock tower.
