Caption: Specimen of granite from Peterhead Quarry, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Description: The sample is a polished slab of coarse-grained granite with a pinkish red colour. The specimen is of Silurian age. The rock is dominated by large pink alkali feldspar crystals within a groundmass of intergrown quartz, feldspar and black biotite mica. The quartz appears as irregular grey masses resembling broken glass. The Peterhead granite is one of the best known Scottish building stones. It has a worldwide reputation as a durable and resistant stone. It can be seen in Edinburgh in the Palmerston Place Church (built 1873-75) where it has been used internally for arches and columns, and in the Old Waverley Hotel on Princes Street (built 1883-87) where it is used as columns around the windows.
