Caption: | Specimen of granite from Criffel granite, Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland |
Description: | The sample is a polished slab of granite showing a uniform coarse-grained crystalline rock containing a large black inclusion or xenolith. The specimen is of Silurian age. The rock is composed of large pink crystals of alkali feldspar within a grey-coloured groundmass of intergrown quartz, feldspar and biotite mica. The Criffel-Dalbeattie granite is the largest of the Galloway Granites. It is a composite intrusion consisting of an early quartz-diorite which forms a separate intrusion adjacent to the main one. The central, later part is a porphyritic granodiorite. The Galloway granites are associated with a well-developed dyke swarm. In addition to the large granite masses, smaller intrusions of granodiorite of the same age and origin are found in the area, notably near Creetown where the stone has been quarried. |
