Caption: Sketch map of the slate quarries near Dunkeld. 1944, Perthshire, Scotland
Description: Sketch map of the slate quarries near Dunkeld, 1944. The slate belongs to the Aberfoyle Slate, part of the Southern Highland Group of the Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian). The Aberfoyle Slate outcrops on both sides of the Tay Valley half a mile to one mile south-east of Dunkeld railway station. In 1944 the quarries had been abandoned for at least 40 years. There are two main quarries, the Birnam Quarries, on the west side of the river, and the Newtyle Quarries, on the east side. The slates are grey, purple and green with a good proportion of last-named. Banding is moderately common and can be seen most clearly in the green varieties. Slate surfaces are even to somewhat rough; texture is fine to medium; pyrites crystals (`diamonds?) are very sparse and small.
