Caption: Specimen of flaggy sandstone from Ladycross Quarry, Slaley, near Hexham, Northumberland, England
Description: The sample is a laminated sandstone which has been quarried and cut for use as a roofing tile. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 6196. The sandstone has an orange-buff colour, probably caused by the presence of iron oxides in the sandstone. Cut slabs for roofing slates have been produced from this particular quarry for centuries. They can also be used as flagstones and floor tiles. The stone from Ladycross Quarry has been used for housing at Slaley itself and Hepscott near Morpeth. It has been used over the centuries at Hexham Abbey. It has also been used for paving at Buckingham Palace in London, and for roofing in the conservation area of Blanchland, just to the south of the quarry.
