| Description: | The sample is a cut and squared block of red sandstone, with a fresh roughly broken face which illustrates the grain characteristics and texture of the stone. The specimen is of Triassic age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5857. Corsehill sandstone is a uniform quartz-rich sandstone with an excellent reputation as a building stone. It has been described as a warm red, fine-grained slightly micaceous sandstone. It is a Triassic red sandstone which was deposited in river systems, as indicated by the relatively thin beds which are laterally continuous and have small-scale cross-bedding. Corsehill quarry operated from the 1880s until the mid 1950s. It was reopened in the late 20th century and is still available today. |
