Caption: | Dark red sandstone from Glendorch 'bastle', Glendorch, near Leadhills, Lanarkshire, Scotland |
Description: | The sample is a rough piece of rubble masonry showing a fresh surface of dark red sandstone. The rock is fine to medium-grained with small dark brown ferruginous specks throughout. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5824. The Glendorch bastle is an early 17th century construction in a remote part of the Southern Uplands, just a few miles to the north of the historically famous mining villages of Leadhills and Wanlockhead. The building is constructed of sandstone which was probably obtained locally, although the site of the quarry is not known. A bastle or bastle house was a fortified house of two or three storeys, the lower floor being used to house animals and the upper for domestic use. This particular example has been partially restored using traditional materials by volunteers who presented the sample of original masonry to the building stone collection of the British Geological Survey. |
