Caption: Sandstone from Newton Quarry, Gatelawbridge, Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Description: The image is a rough hand specimen of fine-grained 'red' sandstone, showing thin sedimentary bedding surfaces. The specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5855. The red colour in the sandstone is due to the presence of very fine-grained iron oxide minerals (hematite) which coat the quartz sand grains which make up the rock. Compositionally the sandstone is quartz-rich, with a relatively low content of other minerals such as feldspar and mica. The well-known red sandstones of Dumfriesshire have long been used as building stones. Following the arrival of the railways during the 19th century it was possible to transport the stone much more easily and economically. The red sandstones became fashionable in cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh where they contrasted strongly with the traditional local stones which were a much paler colour, typically buff or grey.
