Caption: Sandstone from Craigend (Craigmillar), Edinburgh, Lothian Region, Scotland
Description: The sample is a rough hand specimen of a uniform sandstone with a pale pink colour. The specimen is of Upper Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5881. A number of quarries operated at Craigmillar in Edinburgh. They mainly supplied rough stone for rubble work in the city. The typical pinkish stone can be seen in many of the buildings in the south side of the city. Craigmillar stone was used as early as the 14th century when it was used for the construction of Craigmillar Castle. The castle sits on an outcrop of the same stone. The stone at Craigmillar was considered relatively impermeable to water and this led to its use in the construction of the Edinburgh Reservoirs and in Leith Docks (1894-96).
