Caption: | Sandstone from Craigmillar Quarry in Edinburgh, Lothian Region, Scotland |
Description: | The sample is a rough hand specimen of a pale pink-coloured uniform sandstone with a weathered edge. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5878. The orange staining along the weathered side of the sample has been caused by oxidation of iron minerals in the rock where they have been exposed to surface weathering. The colour is caused by secondary iron oxide and iron oxyhydroxide minerals which essentially have a 'rust' colour. The quarries at Craigmillar have long supplied building stone for Edinburgh. The stone is known as a compact sandstone, pebbly in places, with a typical reddish to pale brown colour. |
