Caption: | Caithness Flagstone from Holborn Head Quarries, Ness of Litter, Caithness, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a side view of a sample of Caithness Flagstone presented to the Geological Survey of Scotland by a Caithness Pavement Merchant and Quarrymaster, William Langley, in 1910. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5700. The lower half of the sample has been sawn, whilst the upper part has been chiselled and split. The sample is a typical Caithness Flagstone in that it is a uniform grey colour with a very thinly laminated bedding. Caithness Flagstone is commonly very dark grey in colour and has a slightly uneven or rough surface. It consists of very thinly-bedded layers of silt which give it the ability to be readily split into 'flags' providing stones for paving or roofing. The bulk of Caithness and Orkney is characterized by the Caithness Flagstone which naturally forms flaggy elongate strongly bedded units with low bed height commonly less than 10 cm. Specimen size: 5 x 6 inches |
