Caption: Caithness Flagstone from Holborn Head Quarries, Ness of Litter, Caithness, Scotland
Description: The image shows the polished side of a sample of Caithness Flagstone presented to the Geological Survey of Scotland in 1910. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5700. The rock is a typical Caithness Flagstone with a dark brownish-grey colour and very fine grain size. The polished surface is very smooth and marked by small whitish patches of carbonate that occur throughout the matrix of the rock. Caithness Flagstone is known today for its dark almost black colour, seen in many town centre paving schemes (e.g. the High Street of Edinburgh). However, depending on the mineral composition it can weather to different colours. If it contains the mineral dolomite it often weathers to an attractive orange-brown colour. Specimen size: 5 x 6 inches
