Caption: Specimen of metamorphosed dolerite from Kilmartin Quarry, Argyllshire, Scotland
Description: The sample is a small highly-polished block of epidiorite which has been used as a decorative cladding. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5703. The name epidiorite is used for a metamorphic rock with a granular texture that has been derived from the alteration of a basic igneous rock but has the minerals of a diorite, in particular amphibole and an intermediate plagioclase feldspar. Epidiorites that have been deformed or metamorphosed under a stress field can develop a metamorphic fabric, where the constituent minerals are aligned in one direction. Such a rock is known as an amphibolite, or hornblende schist. Epidiorites and hornblende schists are common throughout the ancient Dalradian rocks of the Scottish Grampian Highlands.
