Caption: Specimen of quartz dolerite from Goat Quarry, Fifeshire, Scotland
Description: The image shows part of a polished slab of quartz dolerite, used as a decorative cladding. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5702. The rock is a basic igneous rock containing very little quartz. It is relatively fine-grained which makes it difficult to identify the mineral constituents without a hand lens. Petrology is the correct term for the study of rocks. A petrologist will often make use of a microscope when the rock is fine-grained. A small specimen of the rock is ground down until it becomes wafer-thin, and is then mounted onto a glass slide. The resultant 'thin section' is then placed under the microscope and the constituent minerals can be identified.
