| Description: | The sample is a polished slice of granite showing large pink phenocrysts of alkali feldspar within a coarse-grained granular groundmass of interlocking crystals of grey quartz, white feldspar and black biotite. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5704. The Criffel granite is actually slightly more basic in composition than a true granite, and it is technically a granodiorite. This is reflected in some of the minerals, which include amphibole and sphene. Traditionally in Scotland granites were exploited in Aberdeenshire (pink and grey granites from the Peterhead and Aberdeen quarries) and Galloway (the grey granites of Creetown and Dalbeattie). Grey Galloway granite can be seen in Edinburgh where it has been used for the lower part of the facing for the National Library of Scotland (1937-1955) on George IV Bridge, and in the base course of St. Andrew's House (1936-39) where it is used alongside Darney sandstone. |
