Caption: | Polished sample of Peterhead granite from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland |
Description: | The specimen is a polished slice of granite from Peterhead, showing the pinkish-red colour for which this particular granite is famed. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5621. The rock is composed of abundant pink-coloured crystals of feldspar withinin a groundmass of darker grey quartz, with small specks of biotite mica. It has a uniform texture and appearance. Granite is formed by the relatively slow cooling of bodies of magma at depths of several kilometres which results in coarse-grained rocks of interlocking crystals. Traditionally granites were exploited in Aberdeenshire, with the Peterhead quarries producing pink granite, whilst those in and around Aberdeen itself produced pink and grey granites. Granites from these sources have been used in buildings throughout Britain and have been exported widely. Even in Edinburgh, the 'sandstone city', there are fine examples of Scottish granite in buildings, plinths and monuments. |
