Caption: Specimen of red sandstone from Gatelawbridge, Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Description: The sample is a cut slab of red sandstone. The specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number 5597. The rock is a uniform medium-grained sandstone, with faint bedding planes visible as a series of thin parallel bands running along the length of the sample. Most of the red sandstones used as building stones are quartz-rich and have a mineral composition identical to, or very similar to the more common grey or yellow-buff coloured sandstones. The reason for the red colour is the presence of very thin coatings of iron oxide (hematite) around each of the quartz grains, producing an overall red appearance. This is a characteristic of the arid environment in which these sandstones were formed.
