Caption: Specimen of metamorphosed dolerite from Kilmartin Quarry, Argyllshire, Scotland
Description: The sample is a cut and polished slab of a dark igneous rock, a metamorphosed dolerite intrusion. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5694. The rock is medium to coarse-grained with a uniform granular texture. It has a dark colour and is dominated by mafic minerals, rich in iron and magnesium. It contains paler pinkish patches and streaks composed of plagioclase feldspar. When basic igneous rocks are metamorphosed they undergo alteration of the primary igneous mineral assemblage with formation of a new suite of minerals. The types of metamorphic minerals formed depend on both the composition of the primary assemblage and the temperature and pressure conditions of the metamorphic event. Metamorphic mineral reaction occurs faster in the presence of a fluid phase.
