Caption: Specimen of quartz dolerite from Goat Quarry, Fifeshire, Scotland
Description: The sample is a polished slab of hard dolerite stone which has been used as a decorative cladding on a building. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5700. The rock is a quartz dolerite from the large suite of Lower Carboniferous dolerite intrusions in the Midland Valley of Scotland. A dolerite is a medium-grained igneous rock which is generally intruded at a high level into the Earth's crust to form dykes or sills. In general they consist of a calcic plagioclase feldspar such as labradorite and pyroxene, often intergrown in an ophitic texture. Because of the dark colour and generally fine grain size it is often difficult to identify the constituent minerals in hand specimen. The name dolerite comes from the Greek doleros which means deceitful, referring to the fine-grained character which is difficult to identify.
