Caption: Specimen of granite from Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Description: The sample is a cut and polished slab of porphyritic granite used for cladding on buildings. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5698. The rock contains large crystals of pale pink and grey feldspars within a granular groundmass of interlocking feldspar, quartz and biotite. The quartz appears as grey glassy grains with irregular shape, and often looks like broken glass. The biotite is black in colour and can be distinguished by its strong reflectance. The Criffel-Dalbeattie granite complex covers a large area of south-west Scotland, and the pluton has several small outlying outcrops. It forms the obvious landmark of the high ground of Criffel Hill at 1866 feet high. It has been extensively quarried for a number of years at Dalbeattie, but also from outcrops further to the west at Creetown. Stone from here was used in Edinburgh in the middle of the 20th century, for example for the base course of the National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge (1937 to 1955) and also for St. Andrew's House (1936-1939).
