| Description: | The sample is a cut slab of the Ross of Mull granite, showing characteristic red coloration. The specimen is of Silurian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5707. The Ross of Mull granite was dated by the potassium argon radiometric method at about 420 million years. Ross of Mull granite has been used for Iona Abbey, columns for the Glasgow General Post Office and Glasgow University, Manchester Town Hall, St. Georges Hall Liverpool, the High Commissioner's House in Wellington, New Zealand, Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, Royal Mausoleum Frogmore London, Eric Liddell Memorial in China. It was also the favoured material for building the famous lighthouses of Skerryvore, Ardnamurchan, Dhu Hartach and Hyskeir. Its strength is recognized by its use in the Blackfriars, Westminster, and Holborn Viaduct bridges in London. |
