Caption: Specimen of epidiorite from Kilmartin Quarry, Argyllshire, Scotland
Description: The sample is an epidiorite rock which has been cut into a thin slab, with one surface polished to give a highly decorative surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5680. This slab would be used as cladding in a modern building. Epidiorite is a name geologists use to describe an intrusive basic igneous rock that has undergone metamorphism. As part of this process the mineralogy of the rock has changed. Many epidiorites are present in the ancient Dalradian rocks of the Scottish Highlands and in Ireland.
