Caption: Aberfoyle slate from Aberfoyle Slate Quarries, Perthshire, Scotland
Description: The specimen is a cut and dressed sample of the purple variety of Aberfoyle slate. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5922. The colour of slates generally results from the presence of iron-rich minerals; red and purple from fine-grained hematite; grey and blue from variable amounts of pyrite. The chief visible characteristics of slates are colour, surface appearance and texture. The colour of Highland slates is usually dark. Blue-grey shades are characteristic of the Ballachulish and Easdale belts, whilst the Highland Border belt has a variety of colours, chiefly grey, blue, purple and green.
