Caption: Caithness Flagstone roofing tile from Holborn Head Quarries at Ness Of Litter, north of Brims Hill, Caithness, Scotland
Description: The image is a specimen of a roofing tile made from Caithness Flagstone. It is cut and dressed in the traditional Scots style, termed 'squared and shouldered', with a single nail hole at the top end. The specimen is of Devonian, Middle Old Red Sandstone age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number T 71A. The size of the roofing flag is 11 x 14 inches, which was as supplied to customers, although sizes vary considerably with what could be produced at any one time from the quarry. The sample was presented to the Geological Survey of Scotland in 1910 by Wm. Langley, Quarry Master and Pavement Merchant, Thurso, who operated the quarries at Holborn Head and Scrabster. Around Scotland laminated sandstones were locally available, and these thicker and heavier stone slates were commonly used locally in the 17/18th centuries. Many small quarries (mostly disused) exploited local materials (for example Caithness Flagstone and Angus Arbroath pavement, Tomintoul (mica schist), Thornhill (red sandstone) and smaller quarries in Orkney and Shetland). These all created the diversity of character of the built heritage.
