Caption: Caithness Flagstone roofing tile from Whitemoss Quarry, 3.5 miles south-east of Thurso, Caithness, Scotland
Description: The image is a roofing tile of Caithness Flagstone, which has been cut into a square shape with a single nail hole at the top. The sample is broken and one corner is missing. The specimen is of Middle Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number T 53A. The Caithness Flagstone formed a major economic resource which provided livelihoods and was significant for the local economy, particularly in the 19th century. Several communities were based around the quarrying industry e.g. Castletown with its large harbour and piers, now disused. Caithness Flagstone has been exported to as far away as Australia and South America, most commonly originally used in the east coast of Scotland and England. Notable examples are in the Strand and Euston Station concourse in London. The specimen was presented in 1910 by David Coghill, Managing Director of the Caithness Pavement Quarries Limited. At this time the company operated several quarries in Caithness, including Spital, Whitemoss, North Weydale, South Weydale and Newlands of Guise.
