Caption: Specimen of slate from streamlet 0.25 miles west of Duror Inn, Cuil Bay, Appin, Argyllshire, Scotland
Description: Typical dark 'West Highland slate' with reflective cleavage surface containing a strong 'grain'. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4828. In geological terms the grain is a lineation caused by the intersection of a secondary, usually minor, cleavage on the main cleavage surface. This sample is from the Cuil Bay Slate Formation, a narrow band of slate-rock that extends along the coast of Appin from Cuil Bay to the Island of Lismore. Geologically it is a distinct unit which is stratigraphically younger than the Ballachulish Slates. Specimen size: 11x9cm.
