Caption: Specimen of slate from quarry opposite Lock No. 7, Cairnbaan, Crinan Canal, Argyllshire, Scotland
Description: Dark slate with very fine-grained smooth cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4472. This specimen is very similar to the West Highland 'blue' slates, best known from the major quarries at Ballachulish and Easdale. In fact this sample comes from a distinct band of slate that occurs to the east of the Easdale Slate, from the Loch Awe group, which was exploited mainly for local use in a series of small quarries in Knapdale, Tayvallich, around the Crinan Canal, and Kilchrenan near Oban. Specimen size: 12x10cm.
