Caption: Fragment of Norwegian 'Green Rog' roofing slate, Norway
Description: Small part of a roofing slate, showing the typical reflective silver surface of a Norwegian slate. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5809. This sample was obtained from Dunvegan School in Skye in 1938, indicating that Norwegian slate was being imported into Scotland at that time. 'Green Rog' is the trade name used for this variety of slate, and it appears in several parts of Scotland in the early part of the 20th century. In the late 1920s and 1930s a considerable amount of slates was being imported into Scotland from Scandinavia. Specimen size: 10x8cm.
