Caption: Specimen of green roofing slate from Cumberland, England
Description: Greenish-grey slate with a uniform coarse 'grainy' surface. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5793. This slate has a typical colour and texture of a Cumberland slate. This particular sample was obtained from the Buttermere Green Slate Co. Ltd. of London. Records show that the company operated several slate quarries in the Keswick area from 1896 to 1924. This particular sample was aquired by the Geological Survey of Scotland as part of a survey into roofing stones being used in Scotland at that time. Specimen size: 18x12cm.
