Caption: Specimen of Westmorland Green roofing slate from Cumberland, England
Description: Typical green-coloured Cumberland slate with relatively rough 'grainy' surface texture. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5789. The specimen has the label of the Broughton Moor Green Slate Quarries Ltd., Coniston. This sample would be too small for use on a roof and was probably sent out to merchants and builders to market the particular slate variety. Cumberland slate became more common in Scotland as the railway system developed in the mid- to late-19th century. It is still used today, particularly as a replacement for original Scottish slate or roofing stones that can no longer be obtained. Specimen size: 17x12.5cm.
