Caption: Specimen of roofing slate from Styrig Quarry, Keswick, Cumberland, England
Description: Pale grey slate with smooth very fine-grained surface. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5786. The sample has the label of the Stye Rigg Quarry, with the name Mr. B. Johns Keswick. The variety is described as 'Barred, Striped or Rustic Slate' available in sizes of '20 to 12 inches long'. Records show that a Rigg Head slate quarry was operational in Borrowdale from the late 1800s until its closure in 1934. The same records show that Johns operated at least seven slate quarries in the Borrowdale and Keswick areas at this time. Specimen size: 18x11.5cm.
