Caption: Specimen of roofing slate from Westmorland, England
Description: A typical grey-green Westmorland slate, showing the trade mark stamp of the Elterwater Green Slate Company Limited of Ambleside. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5783. The slate is dressed in a 'shouldered' style, with two nail-holes typical of the English and Welsh slate quarries. The Elterwater company marketed their product as 'Seagreen Slates'. Scots slates are dressed in a style termed `squared and shouldered? with regular squared ends with the top corners being cut away, and a single nail-hole at the top end. This contrasts with the English and Welsh styles which are generally a square tile of regular size, with a single nail-hole in each top corner. Specimen size: 26x15cm.
