Caption: Specimen of roofing slate from Aberfoyle Slate Quarries, Perthshire, Scotland
Description: Dark grey slate with highly reflective cleavage surface showing ribboning due to the presence of bedding. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5780. This neatly dressed square specimen is one of a number provided by the Aberfoyle Slate Quarries in order to market their product. Such samples would have been sent to slate merchants and builders so that they could select slates of different appearance and colour for different buildings. These samples were presented to the Geological Survey of Scotland, probably in the inter-war years of the 20th century. It is estimated that from 1870 to 1880 the output of Scottish slates was approximately 25-30 million per year, giving employment to 1,000-1,500 men and boys. Specimen size: 15x15cm.
