Caption: Specimen of roofing slate from Aberfoyle Slate Quarries, Perthshire, Scotland
Description: Dark grey-greenish slate, termed 'green variety' showing very strong ribboning on the cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5772. The Aberfoyle Slates occur in a structurally complex zone of geological deformation known as the Tay Nappe, close to the Highland Boundary Fault. The Tay Nappe is a vast flat-lying fold that overturns rocks of the Southern Highlands over an area of hundreds of square kilometres. The Aberfoyle Slate Formation occurs associated with a more sandsy unit termed the Bed Ledi Grit, named after the hill to the north of Aberfoyle.
