| Description: | Fine-grained, orange-brown coloured sandstone with faint traces of bedding. This specimen is of Triassic age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC4845. The Caledonian Railway Company opened a railway connecting Glasgow and Carlisle in 1847. Within a few decades branch lines connected the quarry to the main railway system which allowed transport of stone directly to metropolitan areas and also to sea ports such as Silloth, Maryport and Whitehaven. Much of the stone from Corsehill appears to have been taken by rail to the port of Silloth in Cumbria. This port was built in 1859, served with railway sidings and hydraulic cranes. It is known that stone was transported to Belfast, and shipping records indicate that trade was also carried out with London and Liverpool. Size of specimen: 22x12x8 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5YR6/6, light brown. |
