Caption: Rock specimen Delph sandstone from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.
Description: Fine-grained uniform sandstone with no visible bedding. The stone has a distinctive strong yellow-brown appearance. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5804. Delph sandstone is from the Coal Measures of Carboniferous age. It is used for paving, walling, dressing and fireplaces. It has been used for repair at Bolsover Castle, and in 1981 it was used for paving and steps for the subway at the Tower of London. Stone has been quarried in this area for many centuries, but has been worked intermittently through the 20th century. The quarry is currently active and stone such as this is currently available to be used for repair work to sandstone buildings in Scotland. Size of specimen: 14x7x5 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10YR6/2, pale yellowish brown.
