Description: | Oblique photograph of sample of red sandstone, showing the coarse-grained nature, and parallel sedimentary bedding. This specimen is of Permian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5859. The rock is a quartz-rich sandstone with distinctive yellow-brown colour. As well as being used for prestigious landmark buildings, Locharbriggs red sandstone was used extensively for housing in Glasgow, Greenock, Dumfries, Paisley and is also seen in Carlisle, Perth, Lanark and Stirling. Size of specimen: 15x13x6 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 10R5/6, reddish orange. |
