Caption: Rock specimen of sandstone from Prudham Quarry, Hexham, Northumberland, England.
Description: Oblique photograph showing block of sandstone with one cut and polished face. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC872. Prudham stone was brought to Scotland by rail. Large quantities of Prudham stone were used in tenements in Marchmont between 1876 and 1914. It has been used for many prestigious buildings in Edinburgh, such as the McEwan Hall (1888-97), Balmoral Hotel (1902) and later as cladding in the St. Andrews Square Bus Station (1970). Prudham stone is no longer available as the quarry closed down in the late 20th century. Size of specimen: 9x9x6 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5YR7/2, greyish orange pink.
