Caption: Rock specimen of Crosland Hill sandstone from Moorfield Quarry, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England.
Description: Oblique photograph of block of sandstone showing concentric banding caused by the presence of iron oxidation fronts in the rock. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5825. These fronts form when groundwater fluids permeate through the porous sandstone and stimulate chemical reactions that alter the iron minerals present in the rock. Precipitation of new iron minerals of different type causes the different colours to appear. The banded or zoned appearance is often due to the repeated pulsating nature of the fluid input. Such banding is sometimes referred to as 'Liesegang rings' . Size of specimen: 10x10x8 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5YR7/4 to 10YR8/2, orange-brown to very pale orange.
