Caption: Rock specimen of flagstone from Castlehill Quarry, Castletown, Caithness, Scotland.
Description: Sample of paving flagstone presented to the Geological Survey in 1910. This specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC5699. Bedding surface 'half rubbed' i.e. partially polished to give a smooth surface, with shiny reflective mica flakes, small black pyrite clusters and larger calcareous patches. Paving material was initially shipped to urban centres along the east coast of Scotland and England, but soon gained a world-wide reputation, being exported as far away as Australia and South America. Caithness paving was used in London for the Strand and Euston Station concourse. Size of specimen: 15x15x6 cm. Munsell colour code and colour N5, medium grey.
