Description: The sample is a fine-grained, uniform and grey-coloured sandstone, typical of Craigleith Quarry. This specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC5910. Craigleith stone was known for its strength and durability, and this sample is from the best material located in 'the old deep quarry'. Apart from being used in Edinburgh, Craigleith stone was used to build the Bank of England in London in 1770, the British Museum in 1828, and parts of Buckingham Palace (1825-35). Size of specimen: 9x4x2.5 cm. Munsell colour code and colour 5YR9/1, pale pinkish grey.
